Building Courageous Leaders for the Church of Tomorrow
A Conversation with Rev. Gunnar Magi
At the European Congress on Evangelism, Enkelejda Shelburne had the privilege of meeting Reverend Gunnar Magi, a leader whose life and ministry continue to inspire many. With warmth and humility, he shared how God transformed his life and how he now equips a new generation of church leaders.
Maggi grew up in an unusual setting—at racing tracks with his father, a professional driver and outspoken atheist. “When I asked my dad if there was a God, he said no. And because he said it, I believed him,” Maggi recalls.
After his parents’ divorce, he was left searching for meaning. At fifteen, he attended a Christmas concert where, for the first time, he prayed: “God, if you’re there, I want to know you.” Soon after, reading the Bible led him to faith in Christ—a decision that changed the course of his life.
Today, Reverend Magi serves as president of Tyndale Theological Seminary in the Netherlands. Founded forty years ago by Billy Graham, Tyndale trains pastors and leaders from around the world. “In a secularized world, pastors need more than head knowledge,” he says. “They need discipleship, mentoring, and shared service. Ministry requires full commitment.” Alongside academic study, Tyndale emphasizes discipleship, mentoring, and mission trips. Students live together on campus, learning not only in classrooms but also through shared life and service.
To pastors and church leaders in Albania and Kosovo, Magi offers encouragement rooted in Scripture: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” He reminds leaders that effectiveness is not measured by numbers or technology but by faithfulness. “Often, the most effective pastors are in small churches, shepherding people through friendships. Be courageous. Don’t model someone else—God has given you a unique voice.”
He believes God speaks through Scripture, circumstances, and convictions. “If you want to hear from God today, open the Bible. His Word is always alive.”
Reverend Magi’s story is an inspiration to all of us in Albania and Kosovo, a young church in need of good mentors and heroes to faith. This is a testimony of God’s grace—a journey from doubt and atheism to a life devoted to Christ and His church. He continues to inspire and equip leaders who will carry the Gospel forward into the next generation.
