Fiona: A Fight to Heal
Fiona is only 18 years old, yet she carries the weight of a lifetime of pain. Born into the Roma community in a small town in Southeast Albania, her life changed forever three years ago when she fell in love with a young man from her own community. At first, his attention felt warm and safe — a promise of love in a world that often felt harsh.
But that promise was shattered. Slowly, he began introducing her to his friends. What started as casual encounters soon turned into something far more painful. His friends began to harass her, and instead of protecting her, her boyfriend stood by — even participating in the abuse. Fiona was still just a minor, but that didn’t stop them. The people who should have shielded her instead became her greatest source of fear.
Soon, Fiona discovered she was pregnant. She carried her child through the pain, giving birth to a little girl who is now two years old — her greatest treasure, born in the midst of her darkest days. But after the birth, Fiona’s struggles deepened. She faced postpartum depression alone, with no one to truly understand her suffering. The lack of help and timely treatment allowed her mental health to spiral.
Eventually, a psychiatrist recommended therapy. Fiona began counseling sessions, and for the first time in years, there was a glimmer of hope. She is now in the process of recovery — taking medication, receiving psychological support, and slowly rebuilding her strength.
Her journey is far from over. The past still casts long shadows, and each day is a step through pain toward healing. Our Hope Center counselor continues to walk with her, providing therapy, meeting her medical and food needs, and ensuring that she and her son have clothes and care.
Fiona’s story is one of survival — a testament that even in the deepest wounds, there can be seeds of restoration.
